…about Mrs. Hawkins

Thanks for dropping by my blog and a warm welcome to a new school year!  I am excited to begin a new chapter as 3rd grade teacher at Conkwright Elementary.  Over the past thirteen years, I have taught hundreds of students in grades 2-8 and have loved every minute of it. I also enjoy a good book or movie,  visiting museums and galleries and working with clay. I am a lifelong learner who enjoys preparing students for a dynamic and ever-changing world.

A quick bio: I grew up in eastern Kentucky and graduated from Berea College with a B.A. degree in Art. After graduation, I accepted a job teaching ceramics at the University of the Pacific in California and lived there for many years teaching and working in the arts. After earning my multiple subjects teaching credential at CSU Fresno in 2004, I returned to Kentucky to teach second grade for four years, then 4th/5th grade math, in nearby Garrard County. I completed a Master’s in Elementary Education at Eastern Kentucky University with a specialization in reading and writing in 2008 and earned National Board Teacher Certification in 2010.

About my family: My son, Bill, is a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina working on a doctorate in Composition & Music Theory (DMA), and Sarah who is a tech support agent and graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco, CA.  In addition, I am also blessed with two stepchildren who live in Charlotte N.C. and Reno, NV: Monica, a food service manager at the National Whitewater Park in Charlotte, and Jason, the manager in the restaurant and entertainment business in Reno. I won’t forget to mention Suzy, our fourteen-year-old black kitty, a much loved family member. My husband, Ken, and I enjoy living in Winchester and being in a community with so many family and new friends.

Let’s work together to have the best year ever!
